Are you interested in the world of sports betting but feel a little lost with so many strange terms? 😵 Don't worry! It's normal at first. Words like "Moneyline," "Spread," or "Pick" may sound like Chinese, but once you understand them, everything becomes much clearer and more exciting! ✅

At WinFact Picks , we want you to feel confident and well-informed. That's why we've created this basic glossary with the essential terminology you need to start understanding our picks and move more confidently on platforms like Hard Rock Bet .
Basic Glossary of Sports Betting:
Pick (Also: Selection, Prediction) 🎯
What is it? It's simply the specific bet we recommend you make. When WinFact Picks (or any other sports analysis service) gives you a "pick," we're telling you: "We think this is a good bet." 👍
Example: If you read "Our NBA pick today: Los Angeles Lakers ML 🏀", it means that our recommended selection is to bet that the Los Angeles Lakers will win their game.
Moneyline (ML) (Also: Money Line, Match Winner, 1X2 in soccer)
What is it? It's the most straightforward and easy-to-understand bet. You simply choose which team (or player, in individual sports) you think will win the match or event. The points difference doesn't matter, only who wins. 🏆
Example: In an NFL game 🏈 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills:
If you bet on "Kansas City Chiefs ML", you win your bet if the Chiefs win the game.
If you bet "Buffalo Bills ML", you win if the Bills win.
If there is a tie (and there was no option to bet on a tie), what happens to the bet depends on the house rules (it could be a void bet or a loss).
Spread (Also: Handicap) +/-
What is it? This bet seeks to "balance" the odds between a clear favorite and a lesser favorite (known as an underdog ). Each team is assigned a point (or goal) advantage or disadvantage.
Favorite (-) : The favorite team has points virtually "subtracted." For example, if you see "Team A -7.5 " 📉, it means Team A must win the match by 8 points or more for your bet to win.
Underdog (+) : Points are virtually "added" to the underdog team. If you see "Team B +7.5 " 📈, your bet will win if Team B wins the match outright, draws, or even loses, provided it is by 7 points or less (e.g., loses by 1, 2, ..., up to 7 points).
Example: Basketball game 🏀: Golden State Warriors vs. Sacramento Kings.
Pick: "Golden State Warriors -5.5 ". The Warriors must win by 6 points or more.
Pick: "Sacramento Kings +5.5 ". The Kings win your bet if they win the game or lose by 5 points or less.
Over/Under (O/U) (Also: Over/Under, Totals, More than/Under) ⬆️⬇️
What is it? In this type of bet, you don't care who wins or loses the match. What you're interested in is the total number of points, goals, runs, etc., that will be scored in the event, adding up those of both teams. You're betting on whether the actual total will be "Over" or "Under" a specific figure set by the bookmaker.
Example: For a soccer match ⚽, the Over/Under goal line could be 2.5 .
If you bet on "Over 2.5" (More than 2.5 goals), you need 3 or more goals to be scored in the match in total (e.g. 2-1, 3-0, 2-2, etc.) to win.
If you bet on "Under 2.5" (Under 2.5 goals), you need 2 or fewer goals to be scored (e.g. 0-0, 1-0, 1-1, 0-1) to win.
Odds (Also: Quotas) 📊
What are odds? Odds indicate two main things: the implied probability of a given outcome occurring and how much money you can win if your bet is correct. 💰 There are several formats, but the most common in the United States is the American format:
Negative Odds (-): A number with a minus sign (e.g., -150) tells you how much money you need to bet to make a profit of $100. With -150, you bet $150 to win $100 (you would receive $250 total: your bet + your profit).
Positive Odds (+): A number with a plus sign (e.g., +200) tells you how much money you'll win for every $100 you bet. With +200, you bet $100 to win $200 (you'd receive $300 total).
Example:
Team A ML -130 (You must bet $130 to win $100).
Team B ML +110 (If you bet $100, you win $110).
Stake (Also: Unit, Amount Bet) 💸
What is it? It's the amount of money you decide to risk on a particular bet. Many betting services (like ours) suggest "stake" in terms of "units" (e.g., 1 unit, 2 units). This is a strategy for managing your bankroll (your total betting budget) responsibly. The value of a unit is a percentage of your bankroll that you define.
Example: If you decide your "unit" is $10, and a pick suggests a "2 unit" stake, then you would bet $20 on that pick.
And there you have it! 🎉 These are some of the most fundamental terms you'll encounter. Understanding them is the first big step to enjoying sports betting more and following expert advice more clearly.
